Liberia

The oldest independent republic, it was founded in the early 19th century for freed slaves from the USA. Employment is in subsistence farming, cash crops and iron ore. The country was recently destroyed by civil war.

Population: 4.3 million.
Language: English, plus local languages.
Main religions: traditional, Christian, Muslim.
