Rwanda and Burundi

Rwanda and Burundi map Rwanda lies to the east of Lake Kivu and to the south of Uganda. Most of the people are occupied in subsistence agriculture and the cultivation of coffee, tea and cotton. It is the third largest world producer of pyrethrum. It was under Belgian administration until 1962 and was locked in bitter tribal warfare in 1994.

Burundi lies at the northern tip of Lake Tanganyika. Employment is mainly in agriculture. It was a long standing monarchy which became German then Belgian after 1918. It gained independent republic status in 1965.

Rwanda Population: 10 million. Languages: French, English, Kinyarwanda and Kiswahili. Main religions: Christian, traditional.
Burundi Population: 8 million. Languages: Kirundi, French. Main religions: Christian, traditional.
