Mauritius

Mauritius map

Mauritius lies off the coast of Africa to the east of Madagascar. It is a former British colony which gained independence in 1968 and still considers itself to be part of the Commonwealth. The island has almost full employment, much of which is now moving away from the traditional work in sugar and tea plantations to the highly specialised knitwear garment factories.

Population: 1.2 million. Language: English; also French and Creole. Main religions: Hundu, Christian, Muslim.
