Preaching is mainly through bill distribution and press advertising. There are regular visits from overseas and Lithuania. One of the Baltic states, Latvia gained
independence from the Soviet union in 1991. Under the Soviet regime the country
was heavily industrialised with resultant environmental damage, but since independence
traditional forestry, farming and fishing are being reintroduced. Latvia joined the EU in 2004.
