Latvia map One of the Baltic states, Latvia gained independence from the Soviet union in 1991. Under the Soviet regime the country was heavily industrialised with resultant environmental damage, but since independence traditional forestry, farming and fishing are being reintroduced. Latvia joined the EU in 2004.

Population: 2.3 million. Language: Latvian. Main religion: Protestant (Lutheran).

CBM activities The members live mainly in rural isolation, meeting together at Bible Schools and weekend gatherings. Preaching is mainly through bill distribution and press advertising. There are regular visits from overseas and Lithuania. A quarterly newsletter Evangelija Vestnesis (The Gospel Messenger) is produced.
