Rwanda and Burundi map Burundi lies at the northern tip of Lake Tanganyika. Employment is mainly in agriculture. It was a long standing monarchy which became German then Belgian after 1918. It gained independent republic status in 1965.

Burundi Population: 11 million.
Languages: Kirundi, French.
Main religions: Christian, traditional.
